Last week

Its been a really fun adventure getting to know each and one of my scholars from comp 126 summer session. They have been my best way of learning from sharing different perspectives, ideas and thoughts. Each day everyone brought something in mind and the discussion just went on from there. Bill has been really awesome help bringing out our ideas and thoughts. So this week I really know what I’m going to be talking about in my last self assessment paper from how my way of looking at writing changed and how my scholars been the biggest part of my learning out come. Im going to share examples of how a simple thought leads to a big learning outcome. Im also sure to write my outline and body paragraphs first. Then write my introduction last because with my body filled i’ll be able to write a more precise and clear introduction. I’m really going to give a lot of thought into this last paper because I want to end this class proving that I have what it takes to comprehend composition.

WAW is a threshold concept that goes in depth with writing. It gives a lot of readers different perceptions for how writing can be approached. Instead of telling us writers how to write or giving a step by step advice about writing. This book changes our perception of how writing works. If that perception is changed than we can approach writing a lot better. This books introduction gives a lot of constructing meaning to readers of how the writing process can benefit us if we changed the way we approached writing.

According to some stories what makes good writing good is following the rules and avoiding the errors.  This seems like good writing that high school students have picked up but in college its actually much more than just grammatical errors. Its all about having your own voice in the essay and expressing your types of ideas. College professors expect a lot more than just your grammar errors. That is having your own voice in the essay and taking control. If you spend a lot of time correcting errors you will lease likely spending time finding ideas and expressing them. Writing about writing doesn’t teach you and tell you how to write but giving different perceptions of approaching writing.

conceptions are what take up a paper but what writing does challenges your act to hold up those ideas and back them up throughout research. To make a more accurate conception is knowing the situation of the paper and getting to know the audience, exigence and context of your paper. What can make you a stronger literacy person is connecting to the material whether your reading or writing and constructing meaning together. This book gives you a lot of challenges to change your thinking of what writing is about.

Literacy is all about construct. When the reader reads a material that person brings their own experiences and knowledge about the material to their reading thus expanding their understanding about the material. Same goes with writing, when writing your most likely to construct a connection to the material.

Threshold concepts are specialized into every field or majors in order for students to fully understand that subject. If your specializing into a field you are required to learn those threshold concepts to learn more about that subject. There may be some threshold that students don’t have to learn because there major isn’t in that subject. Basically this threshold for this book is about writing and going in more depth for us writers to fully understand how writing works. Writing is universal and is required for everybody to understand it.

Last night we were supposed to read two articles. The only one I was able to read was an essay by Malcolm X named “Learning to Read.” X shares his experience of what it was like to start reading in prison. He came from a bad background of being a hustler to being in prison. When X wrote letters to Muhammad he became increasingly frustrated not being able to express what he wanted onto those letters. When X read books he skipped words he didn’t know and ended up with little idea of the what the book meant. Thats when X started reading the dictionary and started copying word from word. Like X, my experience with reading was similar. In middle school I started to become frustrated when I came upon a word I didn’t know. I started looking up the definition of each word that didn’t make sense to me but I didn’t copy a whole dictionary like X. The only thing I lacked when I was younger was the motivation to read. The motivation I believe that strikes Malcolm was just not being able to express what he wanted onto letters. Especially coming from a civil rights person fighting for equal freedom. This essay really inspires me because X was in prison when he started becoming a more avid reader. Im a free person and I had the education there and all the sponsor needed to increase my reading skills. X had little sponsors when he started to read and he did it all self teaching himself. The only thing I lacked was motivation and this story really inspires me to become a more avid reader.

Introduction

Yesterday in class we covered an important topic that will help me in my future papers. That topic was the introduction of a paper. It all started when Bill brought up a assignment about reading an article. Then annotate it that article, write a summary for each subject and post the summaries onto our blogs. The last thing we have to do is write an introduction piece for our summaries. Why not do the introduction first? Then write our summaries?  These questions popped into my head when Bill was describing the assignments. He then explained to us that if we wrote our summaries first and annotated the article, the introduction will be a lot easier to write. I never thought about writing my papers into this type of method because I always started out with my introduction since it was the first paragraph. If I know what I’m going to write about then I write my body paragraph. My introduction will be a lot easier to write because I know what I’m covering in my paper.

Another great topic that was covered in class that helped me understand what a good scholarly paper is. That is the writer acknowledges the fact that his thoughts are a small piece of the big picture and leaves the reader with more questions to be asked. There is also more research to be done. What I thought was a good example of this was when Marc told his explanation of how high school papers you could just get away with it. He said something about giving his ideas and that problem was solved right away. But its actually more in depth than that because you have to have other people involved into the problem. Their area of expertise is something you don’t have but you need it for the greater good. Your only one small piece to help solve the problem and a good paper ends with more research to be done.

The discussions we have in class are really helpful because it seems when my fellow scholars has there own opinion, it leads onto a discussion that helps us understand some aspects of composition a lot more clearly.

summarizing

Today we tried an experiment with a twenty minute writing about the connection between writing and learning. To me I felt that the hardest part of the experiment was just the twenty minutes of non stop writing. Once we were done we had to summarize what we wrote down onto the board for everyone else to see. I thought the summarizing was the easiest until Bill put me on the spot with my summary. With my summary I used critically thinking three times and it questioned Bill about if I really understood the word it self. I did understand the word but I just couldn’t really get into great details as I wanted to. The discussion that my summary brought to the table was that you can’t use cliches into summaries. They start to question the reader. What I learned about my summary writing was that I expected the reader to understand fully about the meaning of critical thinking. I should’ve been more into detail with what I was trying to get across. We had only 5 minutes to write the summary so I didn’t get really into my “critical thinking” state. Which brings me to the first phrase discussion that we talked about which was Erik summary. Erik realized that the summary part was actually a lot harder than the 20 minutes writing because he didn’t have enough time to think about what he wanted on the board. This leads us to Bills statements for writing a summary. Rule one was that summarizing is demanding and requires a lot of time. When writing a summary we have to take a lot more time getting the rich information. The next was Aprils summary that led us talking about how summarizing can be a breakthrough. For me this means that a summary is a strong piece of literacy that can break through a mind, pointing out the great details in a short details. Thats why it takes a lot of time make a good summary. Rule three was what I brought to the table with my summary which is don’t overuse a word. It will start to question your readers because your relying on that word a lot. This discussion my summary brought made me realize that summaries are really time consuming and it is harder than writing 20 minutes non stop because you have to gather all the rich information needed to make a breakthrough. The next summary was Jen’s and her summary brought us to the discussion about how a summary is an act of self learning. When summarizing your basically paraphrasing everything you wrote down. When you write everything down your actually learning a lot more than you did before. Its all an act of memorization and that gets glued into your brain a lot more when you paraphrase. The fifth statement that we talked about is we shouldn’t assume that we know whats important and that learning is opening minds to all kind of things like ways of thinking. This last statement was the most that really stood out to me. When I learn something new it always brings a new perspective into my mind and I start looking at things a lot differently. Kip used a strong example when he mentioned Rochelle learning the hashtag on twitter. It might not be important but she learned something new.

This experiment was really great for summarization. Each day were strengthening different parts of our composition and becoming better writers. This experiment was helpful because of my fellow scholars. Each of us brought something new to the table that really made me think about the next time I write a summary. I will reflect back on my notes to this class whenever i have a question about summarization and remember summarizing is demanding!

Research post

Research is the most hardest part of composition I find to be difficult because you have to find sources, pick the most precise and accurate information that goes with your research paper or essay and then cite your sources properly. I just find that picking the best information needed for my essay is the hardest part. With the help of teachers and instructors like Bill and “Peekay” researching has become a lot easier. The information I gained from “Peekay” is really helpful in the part I find researching hard because she discussed about picking out websites for information that we need to research on. First if we find a site, we have to ask ourselves, “does the site have an author? Does the site have authority? Also does that site have information that is worthy enough?.” These questions I will be asking myself from now on before picking a site for a good source on my next research paper. Another part I  found of “Peekay” lecture that is  helpful was the part about using quotation marks when searching a phrase on a search engine. Most search engines might just look up one word that you typed so we must be able to use quotation to look for the full phrase that were looking up. For Bills lectures, I find the most I took away from class is taking notes on everything he is saying in class. This helps me with writing, to trust my pen and choose the best information to write down because I cant write everything down. I try to write everything down but when I hear something important I know this definitely has to be written down. What Bill said about writing everything down is “the information that you least expected to be useful, turns out to be the most helpful.” I found this very true when I reflect back on my notes to the information that I didn’t think was important.   This class is really helping out in my area of difficulties in composition which is research. Overall researching is becoming a lot easier, knowing what I have to do to get the information that is need for the paper that I’m going to write.

Synchronous Blogging

Class today was a lot different from the other days. Were blogging from different locations and to be honest class goes by a lot faster this way but also I have some small questions that I cant get answered. This experiment is different but overall I prefer having class in a group together.

Notes related to literacy

Since I was small I had always a problem with literacy. Reading never grasped my interests and when I was little I barley read. The only time I read was when I was forced to or when I went to class. My concerns for literacy rose when I was in mid school. When reading in mid school I became increasingly frustrated when some words that didn’t make sense. That’s when I started reading and paying attention to each single word. Ever since mid school I  always looked up the meaning of words that I didn’t understand. So today I’m reflecting something I wrote down in my notes that really meant something to me about literacy. At the end of class on June 12 2014, Kat was asking Bill about reading. I didn’t write down the actual words she said but it was something about making a connection and understanding the material of each paragraph. The discussion went on from talking about reading and trying to make a connection with each paragraph in a essay. Bill told us that if we spent about two hours reading and studying a paragraph. We would own that paragraph and the rest of the article will make a lot more sense. If we did do that then the pages will mean something to us scholars. After that, we would make a bridge or connection in the terms of content and sentence structure of the essay. I never thought of reading In that type of perspective. I’m not a big reading person but when I catch something interesting I become more intrigued in reading that content. So when Bill told us about connecting each paragraph and making a meaning out of it. Reading became a bit more easier to understand. For example in my reading with “Texting and Writing” By Michaela Cullington, I tried the method that Bill told us to try. I studied the first paragraph for awhile and then I tried to connect the following paragraph to each other. The result that I found was each paragraph has a meaning that supports the paragraph before and each paragraph always connects to the main idea or thesis of the essay. This information really meant a lot to me because approaching reading in this perspective, helped me out with my reading and writing skills. Making me pick my words carefully and making a bridge between paragraphs. Overall I’m glad Kat brought up this discussion because the information we discussed was really helpful and it sharpened by literacy skills.

Blogging post

Todays class we are just blogging from different locations. My location where I’m blogging from is in the computer lab in the EBH. This place is just like the library because its quiet and I focus a lot better. Also because I have a bummed out knee, its a lot closer for me to walk and that’s why I chose this place.

writing what matters

The article Writing what matters: A students struggle to bridge the the Academic/Personal Divide by Emily Strasser was a really interesting article. Emily argued with another writer named Stanley Fish and his article “Chronicle of Higher Education” she talks about how Stanley was wrong. Fish only focuses on the grammar correction and sentence structure in literacy. Emily argues that it’s not all about grammar issues but getting the student to connect with what there writing about. She points out that getting students to use their own voice when writing is a lot better than just focusing on the grammar. I can really relate to Emily because in my High School composition classes we would mostly focus on just our voices in the essay. Learning composition this way was a lot easier than just focusing on grammar because I would just mainly focus on what I’m writing about than later I would correct all of my grammar errors. With this method I learned a lot more about writing and taking control of my essays.
