Compete like the U.S. Ski Team or Against it?

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

Within the last year or so, Vail Resorts has come out with the third generation of its mobile and web-based ski and snowboard application called Epic Mix.  This application for phones will provide skiers with a way to follow ski racing at six of the seven resorts across California and Colorado.  With a hope of achieving a large use of this application, Rob Katz, the Vail Resorts chairman and chief executive officer says:

We created EpicMix to bring together the digital and physical experience of skiing and riding and make it easy to share your story with friends and family.

With this product, racers will be able to automatically compare their race times with U.S. Ski Team athlete Lindsey Vonn, with gold, silver and bronze medals that can then be posted on the users twitter or facebook.  Katz says:

Working with World Champion ski racer Lindsey Vonn, we have completely redesigned how skiers can fully utilize the latest digital technology to compare themselves against the very best, seamlessly track and share all of their accomplishments and compete against racers from six world-class resorts.

By skiers and ski racers using this application, they are able to feel connected to the infamous Lindsey Vonn by comparing times and receiving medals.  By Lindsey Vonn not only being looked at as a role model that skiers and ski racers can connect to, she help design the application knowing what type of things young racers like to connect to.  Lindsey Vonn says:

Growing up racing, I always looked forward to telling the stories of my races and being able to track my progress and see how my friends were doing. The opportunity to make that happen using the latest technology in social media is absolutely the right next step for ski racing and I was thrilled to be able to work with Vail Resorts to make this happen.

Ways in which that this product could be made better is advertising it during World Cup Races, or advertisements on the Vail Resorts twitter and facebook pages.  More skiers, ski racers, and skiers of the Vail Resorts area will have a higher opportunity to being exposed to EpicMix and the product could therefor make more money.

New Media=better Baseball Fans

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

Aw yes, what is more American than baseball? America has an infatuation with baseball.   Major League Baseball fans inarguably love their sport of baseball. In fact, they love the sport so much so, that they accessed

“1.2 million live audio and video streams of the first available Spring Training games this past weekend”

http://sportsbusinessnow.com/mlb-fans-getting-their-fix-early-as-mlb-com-at-bat-downloads-spike/

which occurred back in February of this year. According the article MLB fans getting their fix early as MLB.com At Bat downloads spike, this activity

“represented an increase of 53% from last year’s opening weekend of games.”

http://sportsbusinessnow.com/mlb-fans-getting-their-fix-early-as-mlb-com-at-bat-downloads-spike/

That is quite an increase over just year’s time. So how was this increase accomplished? Perhaps the MLB.com At Bat application has something to do with it.

The MLB.com At Bat app, allows users to view each and every game (for a price of course), as well as listen to live audio, get the latest news, schedules for the 2014 season, and expert analysis (http://www.mlb.com/mobile/atbat/).

This app is irreplaceable for those of us with an insatiable MLB appetite. Rather than having to wait until you get to a computer to look up news or rushing home to catch the game, users of this app have the games and news in the palm of their hand. They can catch the games on the go without a problem, which is obviously a plus for the fans, as well as the MLB.

With this app, it looks as though the MLB has accomplished a goal of making games, news, etc. available to fans anywhere, at anytime. In addition to this app, the MLB also makes the latest information available by using other forms of non-traditional media like Twitter and Facebook. However, as the title implies, MLB fans may just get their best fix by using the MLB.com At Bat app. This app, in addition to countless other apps, are examples of how sport organizations are now using more non-traditional forms of media for communication purposes. These newer forms of communication are  very convenient, fast, and user friendly.

This development of sports organizations using non-traditional forms of media to make information more available to their target audiences, will only continue in the future as technology becomes more advanced.

Here is video describing what exactly SportStream is and all the cool features. I mean who would’t want a hot babe delivering cheeseburgers and beer to you while watching the game?? It’s complete perfection. Just kidding none of those awesome features are added sadly.

When watching professional games on television either NFL, NBA or even NHL it is very important now to keep updated with what is going on in the social media world. Well Bob Morgan now CEO of SportStream came up with a brilliant idea for all you sport fanatics. He developed a website based off of most major social media sites, Twitter and Facebook, that brings all important sporting news together in one place. This means you can simply go to one spot and find all the important information regarding the current sport issues or evens. No more searching or using a hashtag to try and figure out what play you just missed.

Distribution. This is one of the key factors in SportStream’s growth potential. While Morgan pointed out the strong user engagement numbers and advertising potential with their own applications, SportStream’s greatest growth opportunity comes from increasing adoption from more teams, organizations, and networks to utilize and customize SportStream’s robust platform.

This is Bob Morgan’s main goal to try and spread the word about this great application or download that is available. It makes it so much easier on sport fans to go to one place and be able to keep up to date will the latest information and also able to chat, comment, or tweet with other friends. This is a fantastic idea. It is such a pain to have to take the time to switch from Facebook to Twitter constantly while trying to watch a game to try and figure out if a player’s injury is severe, what other teams won and other important information on the games. It isn’t very popular right now but I have a feeling once its out it will become one of the most popular sport social media sites.

Fc Barcelona Fitness App, a different nontraditional form of communication

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

“Social marketing eliminates the middlemen, providing brands the unique opportunity to have a direct relationship with their customers.”

Bryan Weiner, CEO at Digital Agency 360i

The quote of Bryan Weiner describes the importance of nontraditional forms of communication, like Twitter, Facebook, and Co, which can help enormously to advertise a product, brand or organization. Through my browsing on the Sports Business Now homepage, I found an article about the new and first Fc Barcelona Fitness App (http://sportsbusinessnow.com/fc-barcelona-extends-brand-with-fitness-app/). I asked myself, is an App a nontraditional form of communication like Twitter or Facebook? I would definitely say yes, of course it depends on the App, but through my research about the Fc Barcelona Fitness App I discovered that people all over the world can compete against each other or with their friends.

This YouTube video of the Fc Barcelona Fitness App gives a quick overview about the concept and purpose:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1zdDpKfQM

The Fc Barcelona is the third world’s most valuable sports organization with a value of $2,6 billion and with a whopping $613 million in annual revenue (http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/2013/0717/The-world-s-most-valuable-sports-teams-Meet-Forbes-top-10/Barcelona). Social media is probably Barcelona’s most important tool to communicate and connect with fans all over the world.

“It’s not just a question of numbers. FC Barcelona uses Social Media as a service channel. Twitter, Facebook and Youtube are the best way to connect to a lot of people around the world. We are proud of our values and our identity and this is a good way of spreading them. So, the return of investment is not only in economic terms.”

http://digital-football.com/recommendation/fc-barcelona-see-the-real-value-in-social-media-interview/

As mentioned in the quote, Twitter or Facebook are used as service channels to advertise and promote Barcelona as one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world. Furthermore Barcelona uses these social media platforms to create a brand image and to let their fans be part of their ideology.

badenhausen-social-sports-graphicThese graphs and list show that Barcelona has a huge amount of Twitter followers, 60,8 million, which is more than the whole NFL together.

One of the Fc Barcelona Fitness App goals is to motivate people to get physically fit and to incorporate FCB Fitness into fans daily life. Through this App Barcelona develops a certain life style. With that is meant that fitness is not just fitness anymore, it is Fc Barcelona Fitness. Thereby Barcelona creates a fitness brand, which could develop into gear selling. I could imagine FCB gear which particularly promotes FCB Fitness. Furthermore Barcelona is stepping towards the future of “Mobile” to get fans involved through and with their phones. I also think that the idea of taking Barcelona with you, if it is running or weight lifting, is a major thought here.

“Mobile phones are the future of connectivity. The challenge is to convert Camp Nou in a “mobile friendly” zone.”

http://digital-football.com/recommendation/fc-barcelona-see-the-real-value-in-social-media-interview/

Through this App, Barcelona wants also to achieve an increase of awareness and popularity worldwide. These innovations allow Barcelona to be interactive with their fans and to get them involved with their idols.

All in all the Fc Barcelona Fitness App’s purpose is to interact with their fans and to create a unique brand image. Furthermore Barcelona creates a different brand “FCB Fitness” through their new innovation and takes the next step toward the future of being “mobile” accessible.

To achieve their goal of creating an even better brand image and schema to their fans, it would be a great idea for Barcelona to create a petition on the website https://www.change.org/. This website helps individuals or companies/organization to speak up and to get supporters for social, environmental etc. issues. https://www.change.org/petitions/stop-this-american-horror-story-tell-walmart-to-stop-torturing-pigs, this link is an example of a petition on change.org. This certain petition wants to stop that Walmart tortures Pigs. Barcelona should use this platform to get involved in social or environmental projects.

A Hit or Miss????

Are the plans for Sochi 2014 achievable? Sochi’s plan for hosting the Winter Olympics has six different plans in mind. They start with healthy living, barrier-free world, modern technologies, in harmony with nature, economic prosperity, and finally culture and national values.

For starters I believe the healthy living plan is a great idea. I really agree that with the hosting of the Winter Olympics it should bring motivation to locals, children and participants in sports and physical activity. In my opinion if I knew Durango was going to host the Winter Olympics, you better believe I would want to be come more involved with participating in these sports or just to simply improve my physical fitness level. I also totally agree that medical services will rise in quality and bring forth more attention.

On the barrier-free world I can also see this plan working out. I have worked with people and children that have disabilities. It is remarkable how their attitude changes so drastically when they realize that they can also participate in the same activities that all the others can. I believe we  can all work together to help these unfortunate people understand that their importance in life, especially sport, is just as important as anyone else.

With the face paced growth of technology I completely believe that their aspect of modern technologies will work . In the technology world almost anything is possible. These new advancements of the UIS portal is a fantastic idea it can help participants and spectators, internationally, be able to easily make their stay a less of a hassle.

In harmony with nature is one of the most important steps I believe in the plan. It should be mandatory at all big sporting events like these to make rules and regulations on how much of an impact any set up can take on the environment. Nothing would make a person more upset than if a huge event like this was supposed to help their local economy but instead it completely destroyed their scenery and surrounding environment.

The last step of the plan I agree with is the economic prosperity. The object of this step is to help the local economy as much as possible. This means new jobs, volunteer movement and the upbringing of more business to local companies. If it works according to plan the place of Sochi should see a huge economic gain.

The last step of the plan I am questionable about. When bringing up cultural and national believes it is a touchy subject. Some countries care so strongly about their culture that any  new interruptions to that can cause some tension. If someone has a set belief on something it is very difficult to change their mind.

In this YouTube video it shows just a glimpse of what creations they are going to and have added to the location to make it easier for spectators and participants. It shows the technology part of the plan does not seem to be an issue.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uluVnk7kBgE

Over all I believe Sochi’s plan for the Winter Olympics in 2014 is a great idea. If the plan works it could be a huge economic and intellectual gain for the area.
