Senators join push for tuition funds Bennet, Udall bill targets federal money for Native Americans at FLC

Colorado U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Mark Udall have introduced legislation supporting a bill offered by Democratic colleague Rep. John Salazar of Manassa to help Fort Lewis College meet its mandatory tuition waiver for out-of-state Native American students.

Congressman Salazar authors legislation to aide Fort Lewis College with Native American tuition reimbursement

WASHINGTON, DC – Today U.S. Congressman John Salazar announced the introduction of legislation to aide Fort Lewis College with Native American tuition reimbursement.   
Due to a 1910 federal mandate as part of the original land grant, Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado is required to provide a tuition-free education to all qualifying Native American students.  Without federal legislative action, the long term viability of this program could be in jeopardy. 

Grant Funds Financial Literacy Project at DHS

              This year, FLC Professor Rick Gore of Accounting received a $1,500 grant from the Ballantine Family Fund for a project to teach financial literacy at Durango High School. The project, called “Financial Literacy at Durango High School,” was used to fulfill a new graduation requirement for Durango High School juniors. Sherin Clarke, a former student of Gore’s, thought of the project and met with Gore over coffee to discuss it. Sherin is now an associate with Fredrick Zink & Associates in Durango. Gore conversed with Dr. Steven Roderick who was enthusiastic about the proposed project and led Gore in the direction of the Ballantine Family Fund for the grant.
